21 days, 450 miles: daughter's horse ride in memory of late father

Published 5 May 2009

Sam John, from the Borders in Scotland, is organising a horse ride in memory of her late father, Barrie John.

Sam and fellow riding enthusiast, Laura Koppel, will be setting off from Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh on 1 August 2009 to help raise money for Alzheimer's Society. Sam's father was diagonsed with Alzheimer's disease.

The ride will take 21 days to complete and the riders will cover over 450 miles, passing through Scotland, England and Wales before finishing at 'Tonna Hospital' in Neath, South Wales.

Through this horse ride, dubbed the 'Memory Ride' by Sam, the girls hope to raise £10,000 to donate to Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer's Scotland.

Sam feels that organising this ride is a fitting way to celebrate the life of her father, and raise money for, and awareness of, people with dementia and their carers.

Sam explained why she wanted to support Alzheimer's Society,

'My father Barrie John was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2001; at the time I was living in Jersey and I could not be there to support my step-mother as much as I'd have liked.

Alzheimer's Society was a great support to both my father and step-mother.'
