Elaine Moody joins Stampeder team to run Flora London Marathon
Published 22 April 2009
At 9.45am on Sunday 26 April a team of over 320 runners will be representing Alzheimer’s Society in the Flora London Marathon 2009, which has become the largest annual fundraising event in the world.
One team member taking her place on the start line in Greenwich is Elaine Moody, who has overcome more than most to make it there.Along with the months of training necessary to prepare your body to run 26.2 miles, Elaine also has to deal with the daily challenges brought by having Alzheimer's.
Soon after being diagnosed with dementia three year's ago, Elaine took up running for the first time.
Elaine said,
'Running gave me a new hobby, and a huge sense of achievement with each distance I was able to reach'.
Elaine steadily increased the length of her runs, before successfully completing her first London Marathon last April 2008. Before the crowds had even begun to disperse, Elaine had vowed to do it all again.
'Running the marathon was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and I can't wait to do it all again'.
When asked why she took up running, Elaine said,
'There's a lot of things that I can't do, this is something I can do'.
Elaine is set to repeat her exceptional accomplishment all over again this year, and in doing so show what can be achieved. To sponsor Elaine online please visit www.justgiving.com/elainemoody.
If you would like to support Elaine and the rest of our runners on the day, we would love to have your help in cheering on the team. Please email events@alzheimers.org.uk to receive maps and info on our cheering points.
Good luck to all the Stampeders participating in this year's marathon!
