What will inspire you to run the Marathon?
Published 14 January 2009
Abi Slater, Head of Marketing at Metro newspaper, was inspired to run the London Marathon a few years ago when, for the first time, she went to cheer on the crowd and found the atmosphere electrifying.
'I work for Metro newspaper and when the chance came up to run in the 2009 marathon I volunteered. There are three of us running this year, one experienced marathon runner and two of us who are first timers.
As soon as I signed up I knew I was going to run for the Alzheimer's Society. My grandmother, Mary Greenhalgh, had the disease when I was in my teens. She was the most wonderful woman and it was devastating to watch her deteriorate. She received a lot of support from the Alzheimer's Society and was also involved in some drugs trials which I know made her feel that she was contributing to a future cure.
I hope running the marathon for Alzheimer's Society will be a fitting tribute to my lovely Grandma.'
Metro will be tracking Abi and her colleague's progress in the run up to the marathon in April.
