Our comments on Alan Johnson's speech at ADASS conference
Published 27 October 2008
Health secretary Alan Johnson today (24 October) said that improving dementia services must be a priority for the NHS and adult social care, at the ADASS national conference.
Alan Johnson's speech gives us hope that dementia is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Dementia is one of the greatest health and social challenges facing society, yet there is a systematic failure to provide good dementia care. Alzheimer's Society research also found that over half of UK adults think there is a stigma around the condition.
The forthcoming National Dementia Strategy for England is a huge opportunity but it will only transform people's lives if it is supported by urgent investment. If we are to bring out of the shadows we need the financial capability to run national awareness campaigns and drastically improve dementia services.
