Long term care forgotten again in Budget 2007

The gaping hole in today's budget is how, as a country, we are going to meet the huge challenge of caring for our older population.

'Only last month the Alzheimer's Society published a stark report warning that dementia currently costs the country £17 billion a year and is set to rise.
The current funding system of long term care is unsustainable yet today older people's care needs seem to have been forgotten. We need an urgent national debate on how we pay for health and social care.
We hope the Comprehensive Spending Review, which will be announced in the autumn, will see increased investment in long-term care. Only if we act now and invest properly we will be able to tackle the huge demographic challenge we face.'
