Alzheimer's Society comment on award for ground-breaking dementia documentary
Published 4 April 2008
We are thrilled to hear Malcolm & Barbara: Love's Farewell has been named best single documentary at the 34th Broadcasting Press Guild Television and Radio Awards.
When Malcolm Pointon was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, he and his wife Barbara made the decision to allow a camera to follow them up until the final stages of the disease, which eventually killed him. The result is an honest and powerful depiction of a terminal illness, which for too long has been discussed in hushed tones.
This documentary is Malcolm's legacy in the fight against Alzheimer's disease and dementia. It is also a testament to Barbara, an Alzheimer's Society ambassador and her continuing campaign to raise awareness of a condition affecting 700,000 people and millions more carers.
