Away from her

Based on the short story "The Bear Who Came Over the Mountain" by Alice Munro, this film is the UK premiere of cult indie actress Sarah Polley's astounding directorial debut.
'A tremendous, touching film showcasing two phenomenal actors at their best.'
Retired couple Grant (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona (Julie Christie) have been married for forty years. Despite some rough patches, their lives are inextricably connected and their relationship seems idyllic.
But their contentment is permanently disrupted when Fiona's memory starts to deteriorate. Determined not to saddle Grant with her declining health, she insists upon going to a rest home - which leads to some serious in their relationship.
Christie is brilliant as Fiona, a woman determined to deal with her illness on her own terms. And Pinsent as Grant, whose tortured mindset dominates the film, is equally outstanding.
Dealing with the slippery divisions between memory and forgetting, guilt and freedom, Away from Her handles the themes of compassion, empathy and enduring love with tenderness and intelligence. It is a heartbreakingly lovely and memorable cinematic experience.
