Alzheimer's Society comment on new research suggesting statins do not reduce risk of Alzheimer's disease or improve cognition, published in Journal of Neurology

Published 21 January 2008

This interesting study contradicts previous research highlighting statins as a possible tool for reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease or slowing down its progression.

There is currently no cure for dementia and research is desperately underfunded. Statins are relatively cheap and readily available, making them a particularly interesting area of research.

Evidence around statins and vascular dementia remains particularly inconclusive. More research is needed to determine whether statins effectively delay onset of this devastating condition.
