Alzheimer's Society comment on Omega 3 helping to reduce risk of dementia

Published 12 November 2007

It is important that people realise there are things we can all do to reduce our risk of developing dementia.

This study on diet and dementia concludes the majority of the population can reduce their risk by eating a diet rich in vegetables, fruit and fish.

Significantly, results show that it matters which oils people choose to include in their diet. Omega 3 fatty acids such as those in fatty fish and nuts are particularly beneficial whereas omega 6 fatty acids as in sunflower oil need to be balanced out by beneficiary omega 3 oils.

A Mediterranean diet full of green leafy vegetables, oily fish and the odd glass of red wine is the best type of diet for those who want to follow a diet that can help lower their chances of developing dementia. Some studies have shown this can type of diet can reduce your risk by up to 40%.
