Alchemist turns old gold into new gold for Alzheimer’s Society

An Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador has transformed old gold into new gold with the help of Saga readers, raising over a quarter of a million pounds for the Society.
Each year Nicolas Mullings, a London jeweller, appeals for unwanted jewellery and turns it into valuable funds as part of the 'Old Gold' appeal.
The Old Gold Appeal has been running 15 years and has just hit the £250,000 mark. Every item is checked and every penny goes towards the work of the Alzheimer's Society.
Nicolas, Alzheimer's Society Ambassador says,
'When I first got involved with the old gold appeal I had no idea it would turn out to be such a success. I am absolutely delighted.
Over the years I have had all manner of things sent to me, from odd cufflinks, to silver costume jewelry, watches and even old gold teeth! Some items just have metal value, others more intrinsic value, but each one has helped raise much needed funds for the Alzheimer's Society.
It doesn't stop here though. Dementia is more than just memory loss; it robs people of their lives and has a devastating impact on families. That is why I will continue to turn old gold into new gold.'
Jo Swinhoe, director of fundraising and marketing says,
'Mr Mullings is definitely worth his weight in gold! This is an absolutely amazing achievement and we are very grateful to Mr Mullings for the countless evenings and weekends he has dedicated to the appeal.
But we need more help! Anyone can get that golden feeling by rummaging through their cupboards and send us their 'old gold'. Anything that is too good to throw away but not good enough to keep can be turned into valuable funds that will provide essential care, support and advice to people with dementia and their carers.'
