Proteins in the blood and the risk of dementia

Alzheimer’s Society comment on research by Monique Breteler et al published in the Lancet Neurology.
'This is an important new piece of research that followed people for over 8 years and confirms that those with high levels of a certain type of amyloid protein in their blood are at increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.
However, the magnitude of difference is not proficient to provide a reliable diagnostic test. It is vital that there is ongoing research into tests that might help identify people who are at a high risk of developing dementia.
This research is extremely encouraging and we hope that in the future better tests and treatments will be available to help us combat this devastating disease.'
