Poor balance predicts Alzheimer’s

Published 23 May 2006

Alzheimer’s Society comment on a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

'This study demonstrates that there is a link between diminished physical function and increased risk of dementia. It is not clear from the study whether this is an early sign of Alzheimer's disease or whether it is a contributing factor in the development of the disease. To understand this link, we need more research in the area of diet and lifestyle choices on the development of dementia.

However, the studies findings are consistent with the Alzheimer's Society's message that leading a healthy life may reduce your risk of developing dementia. As we do not yet know the cause of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, and there is no cure, it is vital that people are aware of anything they can do to reduce their risk.

We would recommend that people take regular exercise; eat healthily; make sure they get their blood pressure checked and take part in social activities. It seems that what is good for your heart is also good for your mind.'
