The group with their cheque to present to Alzheimer's Society

Congratulations to the tashe-tastic 25 Strabane Golf Club members who survived a month of beard growing to round off a great year of community fundraising.

On Friday 30 November 2012 the merry men came together to present Fiona Brown, Strabane Dementia Support Worker, with a cheque for £1,087.80. Here, Sean MacIntyre explained why he and his friends embarked on this challenge:

'My father-in-law, Charlie Friel died last December and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a short while before his death. As Captain of Strabane Golf Club we raise a few pounds for local charities.'

'So this year I chose Alzheimer’s Society as my charity before we did Movember, I had raised over £1,500 and wanted to make that £2,000 before I finish my tenure in December.'

'Myself and a few of my friends got together and discussed how we could raise the £500 that would take me to £2,000 for the year. We decided that we would join the Movember movement, we wanted to get 25 men to grow moustaches for the month of November. We asked only for £20 as a donation or they could raise it by sponsorship, and this would raise the £500 needed. When we gathered in the golf club for the presentation of the cheque we had raised nearly £1,100!'

'I would like to thank all of my friends who have taken the time, and discomfort, over the month of November to raise funds, and all the people who sponsored or donated money to them. We had a very enjoyable month, but I'm not sure if any of us would do it again, but you never know a November is a long way away!'

If you want to see pictures of the moustaches please visit their event facebook page.

If you would like to get involved in fundraising in your local area we have lots of ideas for fundraising individually or there are many events that you can sign up to. All funds raised will go towards supporting Alzheimer's Society fulfil our ambition of a world without dementia.
