Volunteers commended by Sir Michael Parkinson

27 Alzheimer's Society volunteers were commended yesterday by TV personality, Sir Michael Parkinson for their dedication to improving the lives of people with dementia and their carers.
The group was congratulated at a Reception at The House of Lords, which was hosted by Ben Bradshaw MP and attended by a number of high profile MPs, including Nick Hurd MP, Minister for Civil Society.
Each volunteer received a William Brooks Award in recognition of their outstanding volunteering activities, which span befriending to campaigning. The winners had been nominated by fellow volunteers, staff or members of the public. Several of them have been giving up their time for over a decade.
TV Personality and Alzheimer's Society supporter, Sir Michael Parkinson said:Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive at Alzheimer's Society, said:'I was delighted to congratulate these volunteers for their exceptional contribution towards improving the lives of people with dementia and their carers.
'The number of people living with dementia in the UK is rising every day, making the support of volunteers more vital for Alzheimer's Society than ever before. As well as celebrating some outstanding achievements and inspiring a new wave of volunteers, the William Brooks Awards help to raise awareness and keep the conversation about dementia alive.'
Sahirah Javaid, (25) from Bristol was one the individuals to be presented with an award today in the Under 25s category. Sahirah received her award for raising awareness of dementia by placing stories in the local press during her evenings and weekends. She said;'We value highly the work done by each and every one of our volunteers. Whether supporting local services, helping with our fundraising efforts, contributing to the research network or supporting us in some way behind the scenes, their actions help us to continue our vital work. Today was a fantastic opportunity to come together and celebrate their achievements.'
The William Brooks Awards are presented annually to exceptional Alzheimer's Society volunteers. Winners are nominated by fellow volunteers, staff or members of the public.'I feel incredibly honoured to have won this award and was really excited to come to London and meet Sir Michael Parkinson. He gave a fantastic speech and it was lovely to meet the other volunteers, local MPs and Alzheimer's Society staff.'
