Alzheimer’s Society response to ITV’s ‘Exposure: who cares?’ Documentary

Published 25 October 2012

On Wednesday 24 October ITV aired a programme called 'Exposure: who cares?' looking at the current state of care being provided to older people and those living with dementia in Britain.

The episode in the Exposure documentary strand examined the stark contrast in standards between care homes for the elderly, asking whether enough is being done to regulate them.

Alzheimer's Society comment:

'We are appalled at this shocking level of neglect and mistreatment. People with dementia can be some of the most vulnerable in society. The idea that people are not being properly cared for, and in some cases abused, is completely unacceptable.

The culture in care homes needs to change. Everyone in contact with someone who has dementia should receive training to provide the best possible dementia care. We want to make sure that care home staff can feel proud of their role in helping people to live well with dementia and families feel confident in the way their loved ones are being cared for.'
