Zipline challenge trebles fundraising target

Published 23 October 2012

Jean Anderson

Our brave supporter Jean Anderson sped down the longest zipwire in England to raise money for Alzheimer's Society services in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Here's her story:

'On Wednesday 3 October I took the opportunity to ride the Eden Project's zipwire, currently the longest in England at 660 metres. They actually call it 'flying' and the safety instruction video is a spoof on the major airline variety!

Amusement aside, safety is taken very seriously with all the necessary harnesses and attachments checked thoroughly. The 'catchers' at the far end also have to be in place and confirm this by radio before you are allowed to launch. Once kitted out and instructions given I climbed up several steps to the platform 90 metres above the floor of the old pit. I wasn't afraid but was conscious that my heart rate had suddenly increased as I stood waiting for the nod to go.

Although not an especially windy day the air rushed past me with some force as I whizzed down the line; my main concern however was that the impetus forced me to swing round until I was traveling backwards. I hadn't expected this and as I had asked my husband to take a photo from a suitable point, to prove to my sponsors that I had completed the challenge, most of the trip was spent trying to get myself facing forward again! The ride/flight lasts less than a minute and I was soon slowing down and being guided into the landing area and unbuckling the harness.

It was exhilarating and I would love to do it again. Better still, those kind sponsors have donated a total in excess of £455 for Alzheimer's Society both online and in person for which I am very grateful.'

We'd like to thank Jean for her incredible effort and support. If you would like to get involved in fundraising in your local area we have lots of ideas for fundraising individually or there are many events that you can sign up to. All funds raised will go towards supporting Alzheimer's Society fulfill our ambition of a world without dementia.
