Actor, Chris Serle, best known for presenting BBC Inside Out, joined walkers from across Gloucestershire to fight dementia at Alzheimer’s Society’s flagship fundraising event, Memory Walk.

Chris set walkers off to raise money for local Alzheimer's Society services. Over 250 people stepped out to take part in the Gloucester Memory Walk and more than £15,000 is estimated to have been raised to help local people with dementia and their carers.

Participants who took part experienced a demonstration from Alzheimer's Society's Singing for the Brain group, as well as a falconry display, a brass band and plenty of tea and cake.

Chris Serle took part in the 1 mile walk with his wife, Ali and their 8 month old son. Chris said;

'What a super event in these beautiful surroundings - not many better ways to spend a Sunday morning.  I hope this year's Memory Walk raises a lot of money.'

Walkers set off at Gloucester Memory Walk

Memory Walk 2012 is being held in partnership with Bupa Care Homes. Alzheimer's Society and Bupa aim to support more people living with dementia through the vital funds that are raised.

Participants were encouraged to go the extra mile and take part in Bupa's 'Memory Mile' at the end of the walk to raise a further £5 to support people with dementia.

Siobhan Drane, Bupa Care Homes Community and Partnership Manager, said:

'Our staff work closely with those living with dementia and their families, so we know how upsetting it can be. That's why we've been encouraging our staff, residents' friends and families to support the walk so we can raise awareness of dementia, and raise additional funds through the Bupa Memory Mile. It's great to see so many of them supporting the event today.'

Alzheimer's Society's Community Fundraiser, Adrian Williams said:

'Memory Walk went fantastically well and we are all really pleased. This is the second time we have held the event at Highnam Court and it really is a fantastic venue. I am incredibly grateful to the team of volunteers who have worked so hard to make the day possible.  The money raised will all go directly to help support people with dementia and their carers in the Gloucester area.'
