Encore! Star shines for York Memory Walk

Published 20 September 2012

Richard McCourt

Children’s TV favourite Richard McCourt is back in ‘da city’ for Sunday’s Alzheimer’s Society York Memory Walk on Sunday 23 September.

The star of a series of shows - among them Dick and Dom in da Bungalow will start more than 300 people on their way at 11am.

It's an encore for Richard who completed a train and taxi dash from his home in London for last year's event arriving bang on time for the big walk.

Richard, an ambassador for Alzheimer's Society
, will be in Yorkshire ahead of the event this year and avoiding the need for a last minute dash to the tape.

He said:

'It was a fantastic family day out at The Knavesmire last year and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again. '

I am an active supporter of the Alzheimer's Society and so I was really pleased to be asked to launch the York Memory Walk again this year.

'The charity is close to my heart as I cared for my mum who had dementia and understand how hard it is to look after someone with the condition.

'The help we got from Alzheimer's Society services was invaluable and that's why it's important to support Memory Walk.

'Memory Walk gives us the opportunity to really make a difference to those who are living with dementia in Yorkshire, and every penny raised will be used to support local Alzheimer's Society services.'

Alzheimer's Society Community Fundraiser Julie Lee, said:

'It's wonderful to have Richard's support again this year - he's absolutely brilliant and just the person we need for our grand day out for the family.'

Walkers have a choice of distances - one mile or 10km - threading through the historic centre of the city including spectacular gardens and around York Minster.

This year Alzheimer's Society is encouraging people to go the extra mile and take part in Bupa's 'Memory Mile' at the end of the walk for which the company will donate a further £5 for each person to support people with dementia.

'Richard signed autographs, joined people for photographs and started the walk last year with real style - it's great to have him back,' said Julie.

'Anyone can just roll up and register free on the day to take part, the more the merrier, whatever age or ability there's something for everyone.'

Jump, Jive 'n' Wail, a 7 piece Jive band based in West Yorkshire specialising in the music of the 1930s, 40s and 50s, will also be on hand to make things go with a swing

As well as being able to sign up on the day people can find more details at www.memorywalk.org.uk or call 0845 3060 898.

Almost 12,000 people in York and North Yorkshire are living with dementia and services provided by the Alzheimer's Society in the city include three memory cafes, one to one support and information, as well as courses to help carers.

  • Memory Walk 2012 is being held in partnership with Bupa Care Homes. Together, Alzheimer's Society and Bupa aim to support more people living with dementia through the funds that are raised.
