Published 24 July 2012
Gerry Anderson, creator of Thunderbirds, launched the Alzheimer’s Society’s Gloucester Memory Walk at Highnam Court and spoke about his dementia.
Memory Walk 2012 is being held by Alzheimer's Society in partnership with Bupa Care Homes. This year Alzheimer's Society is encouraging people to go the extra mile and take part in Bupa's 'Memory Mile' at the end of the walk to raise a further £5 to support people with dementia.'I was upset when I found out I had dementia but I try to stay positive and enjoy every day. My dementia hasn't just affected me; it's affected my friends and family too. That's why I'm encouraging people to sign up for the Gloucester Memory Walk and help Alzheimer's Society support so many other people with my condition.'
Lorna Robertson, Alzheimer's Society's Locality Manager for Gloucestershire, said:
The Gloucester Memory Walk takes place on Sunday 16 September in the beautifully landscaped grounds of the spectacular 17th Century house, Highnam Court.'We're really grateful to Gerry and Jamie for launching the Gloucester Memory Walk. It's a fantastic way to spend a Sunday. From a four-year-old to his mum and 80-year-old gran, Memory Walk sees whole families coming together to fight dementia.
'Additionally an array of entertainment and refreshments will be available making it a day to remember for everyone who takes part.
'Thanks to the support of Bupa Care Homes, Memory Walk is able to support more people living with dementia in Gloucestershire through the vital funds that are raised.'
Participants can choose between a 1 mile, 5 mile or 10 mile walk. Each walk will meander around the exquisite gardens, with the longest route stretching out to the lovely surrounding countryside and Highnam Woods.
