Actor Bradley Clarkson and Stephen McPartland MP launch Hertfordshire Memory Walk
Published 24 July 2012
Actor Bradley Clarkson was joined by pal, Stephen McPartland MP to launch Alzheimer’s Society’s flagship fundraising event, Memory Walk at Fairlands Valley Park.
Datchworth-raised Bradley, who was selected from thousands to appear in ITV's talent contest, Grease is the Word, has persuaded a number of his own family and friends to sign up and take part in the Hertfordshire Memory Walk on 16 September and is urging other families across the county to do the same.
Bradley spoke at the launch about how his grandmother had Alzheimer's. He said:
'My grandmother lived with Alzheimer's, so I understand the affect it can have on the whole family. Alzheimer's Society does so much to support people with dementia and their carers in Hertfordshire.
'That's why I'm encouraging residents to sign up and take part in Memory Walk. Everyone is walking with one common goal: fighting dementia, and I want to play my part in that too.'
There are almost 13,400 people living with dementia in Hertfordshire and this is expected to rise to 17,400 by 2021.
Memory Walk 2012 is being held in partnership with Bupa Care Homes. This year, Alzheimer's Society is encouraging people to go the extra mile and take part in Bupa's 'Memory Mile' at the end of the walk to raise a further £5 to support people with dementia.
Alzheimer's Society spokesperson, Alice Davies said:'We're so grateful to Bradley and Stephen for supporting Memory Walk. It's a fantastic way to spend a Sunday. From a four year-old to his 80 year-old gran and her dog, Memory Walk sees whole families coming together to fight dementia. A hearty BBQ will be sizzling on people's return and fantastic live music and children's entertainment will help to make it a day to remember for everyone who takes part.
'Thanks to the support of Bupa Care Homes, Memory Walk is able to support more people living with dementia in Hertfordshire through the vital funds that are raised.'
Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage said;
'I'm pleased to be able to join Bradley and the staff and volunteers at Alzheimer's Society today to launch Memory Walk. Dementia touches so many of us, it's important that we do what we can to raise awareness of the condition and join the fight against it.'
The Hertfordshire Memory Walk takes place on Sunday 16 September in 120 acres of leafy parkland and open water across four linked lakes within Fairlands Valley Park and Sailing Centre, Stevenage. Participants have a choice of a short accessible 2km stroll or a more challenging 10km walk. Both will meander around the sparkling lakes where a range of wildlife and birds can be spotted.
