Doin’ the Tyneside Memory Walk. Oi!
Published 23 July 2012
Supporters were right on song for the launch of Alzheimer’s Society Tyneside Memory Walk.
They sang a special Tyneside version of the Lambeth Walk to let people know anyone can sign up for the event now at memorywalk.org.uk
Among the tweaks to the familiar song were:
Any time you're Tyneside way,
Any evening, any day,
You'll find us all
Doin' the Memory Walk. Oi!
Alice Byers of Pelaw and carers Pamela Peacock and Isabelle Robinson, both of Whickham, were among the line-up along with great grandmother Joyce Stiff.
Joyce, of Wrekenton, has memory problems but recalls being called onto the stage of a local club to after being overheard singing a Little Richard number in the toilets.
Alzheimer's Society locality manager Debbie Keenan, said:
Tyneside Memory Walk features a choice of distances - one mile or 10km - in Saltwell Park at 11am on Sunday 30 September, when there will also be family attractions including a performance by the Silver Choir from The Sage Gateshead.'Tyneside Memory Walk is vital in raising funds and awareness to help people with dementia. It's an opportunity for all the family to be involved from 8 to 80 years and more besides.
'All generations take part from mums and dads to grandchildren and grandparents, which reflects the reality that when one person has dementia there is a potential massive impact on the whole family - it affects everyone.'
The choir is part of the Silver Programme and has a wide repertoire ranging from world music - including an African Song of welcome - to an amazing rendition of Aha's Take On Me and traditional songs such as Singing in the Rain.
Almost 5,000 people in Tyneside are living with dementia and working with partners, Alzheimer's Society runs a range of services from day care, through to providing befrienders, dementia cafes and carer support groups.
Memory Walk 2012 is being held in partnership with Bupa Care Homes. Together, Alzheimer's Society and Bupa aim to support more people living with dementia through the funds that are raised. This year Alzheimer's Society is encouraging people to go the extra mile and take part in Bupa's 'Memory Mile' at the end of the walk to raise a further £5 to support people with dementia.
