Surrey Elvis back again to launch Memory Walk
Published 20 July 2012
Award winning Surrey Elvis impersonator, Paul Richie put on his walking shoes for the second year running to launch Alzheimer’s Society’s Surrey Memory Walk.
Paul rocked up in full Elvis gear to give people a taster of what they can expect to see at the Walk, which will take place in Godstone Green on Sunday 16 September. He was joined by local Linda Bruton, from Reigate whose mother had dementia, and local Alzheimer's Society members of staff.
Memory Walk is Alzheimer's Society's flagship fundraising event which sees walks taking place around the UK throughout September. There are currently over 15,000 people living with dementia in Surrey and this is expected to rise to almost 19,600 by 2021. The money raised by the Surrey Memory Walk will help support people with dementia and their carers in the local area.

Paul Richie, Elvis impersonator, said:'My mother, Evelyn, had dementia so I know the devastating effect it can have on the person who has it as well as their family and friends. Dementia touches so many of us in one way or another, that's why I'm supporting Memory Walk. I would encourage everyone to sign up for the Surrey walk and help us support those with the condition.'
Memory Walk 2012 is being held in partnership with Bupa Care Homes. This year Alzheimer's Society is encouraging people to go the extra mile and take part in Bupa's 'Memory Mile' at the end of the walk to raise a further £5 to support people with dementia.'I am delighted that Alzheimer's Society has asked me to help out with the launch of this fantastic event for a second year running. The Society is a cause close to my heart as my brother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease when he was just 42. He unfortunately passed away last December aged 53, so this Memory Walk is even more special to me. I really enjoyed entertaining the walkers last year and am really looking forward to attending in September with my band.'
Lesley Carver, Locality Manager for Alzheimer's Society in Surrey said:
Sandra Mills from Bupa's Tadworth Grove Residential and Nursing Home that cares for residents with dementia, said:'Memory Walk is an excellent opportunity for families and friends to get together and enjoy a day to remember with lots of entertainment and refreshments. Each year the Surrey Memory walk is bigger than the year before and raises even more money. We don't want this year to be any different.
'Thanks to the support of Bupa Care Homes, Memory Walk is able to support more people living with dementia in Surrey through the vital funds that are raised.'
The Surrey Memory Walk will take place at 11:00am in Godstone Green on Sunday 16 September. To register for the Memory Walk please visit Memorywalk.org.uk'Many people have heard of dementia but know very little about it, until it touches their lives. When that happens, it can be upsetting, particularly if it's a loved one. Our care home staff will be getting behind the Memory Walk in September and encouraging residents' families, who have been personally affected by dementia, to get walking to raise valuable funds.'
