Lilian Dykes - 'Volunteer of the Year'

Published 13 November 2007

Lilian Dykes, 82, has been awarded ‘Volunteer of the Year’ status at the York Community Pride Awards which aims to recognise the achievements of unsung heroes from all walks of life.

A volunteer with the Selby and York branch of the Society, Lilian has been helping the branch for 8 years. Whilst initially receiving support from the branch as she cared for her husband, Lilian decided to become a volunteer to return the help she so gratefully received.

Her volunteering has included fundraising, being a member of the branch committee, supporting a local befriending service and providing practical help and a listening ear during the popular carer education courses.

Gill Myers, Branch Manager, is delighted:

'It was great to get the opportunity to nominate Lilian. The excitement of the event itself was completely exceeded when Lilian became the overall winner in the 'Volunteer of the Year' category. I'm delighted.'

Andrew Oldham, Regional Volunteer Development Manager, added:

'Volunteers throughout the Society give their time so willingly. Lilian is a fantastic example of local volunteering and her accolade is a true recognition of that. It is so important to acknowledge the achievements of volunteers and to become 'Volunteer of the Year' is brilliant.'
