Actor and comedian, Hugh Dennis and ITV Daybreak’s Dr Hilary Jones marked the end of Bupa’s charity partnership with Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Scotland at the Bupa Great South Run 2011.
Since 2009, the partnership has raised over £3.5million to fight dementia, with 27,000 people running in support of Alzheimer's Society.
This year's race took place on Sunday 30 October. Leading the 1,300 strong Alzheimer's Society running team, Dr Hilary crossed the finish line alongside his partner Dee Thresher in 01:33:36. He said:
'Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain and affects 1 in 3 people over the age of 65. £3.5million is a fantastic sum of money, and will make a huge difference in helping Alzheimer's Society support people with dementia and their carers. It's great to have been part of team the charity's team, along with the other 27,000 people raising money for this fantastic cause, and keeping fit at the same time'.
Hugh, who completed the race in 01:21:37, said:
'I love taking part in the Bupa Great South Run. It's the main running event that I do every year in support of Alzheimer's Society. I ended up parking in Eastney, so I'd already run two miles just to be here which is not that sensible on the morning of a race!'
Dr Graham Stokes, Director of Dementia Care at Bupa Care Services said:
'We're very pleased to have helped Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer Scotland raise such a substantial amount of money during our three year partnership. As the UK's leading provider of dementia care, we're committed to helping people with the condition to live well and we understand how important it is to work with Alzheimer's Society to support people with dementia today and find a cure for tomorrow. That's why we've already started our next partnership, supporting Alzheimer's Society's flagship fundraising event, Memory Walk.'
