Alzheimer’s Society team ahead of the pack in Bupa Great Yorkshire Run

Sheffield born Richard McCourt, South Yorkshireman Dean Andrews and TV presenter Jamie Darling led the charge for Alzheimer’s Society in the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run on Sunday.
Fitness expert Jamie was the fastest celebrity to cross the finish line in a speedy 00:41:08, but has had plenty of practice, having run all of the Great Runs in the series so far this year. He said:
'It's been a lovely day today and as always it's the support from the crowds and the Alzheimer's Society cheerers that keep you going. The route around Sheffield is quite flat, but I do wish someone would level out that hill as you come up to the finish line!'
Richard McCourt (half of mad-cap children's presenter duo, Dick and Dom), who completed the 10k in 01:03:54, has experience of dementia in his close family and was running the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run for the third year in a row. He said:
'I'm proud to have run the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run again in my native Sheffield. I've thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Alzheimer's Society running team over the last three years as Bupa's nominated charity. It's great to know that we're aiming to have raised £3.5million to support people with dementia and their carers - it's certainly a charity that's close to my heart.'
Dean Andrews (star of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes) passed the finish line at 01:04:37. He also captained to victory 'Team Yorkshire' in the traditional 'War of the Roses'. This is where runners are asked to pledge their allegiance to either Yorkshire or Lancashire, and the winning side is chosen from the average finishing time of all runners competing the 10k course in a time of less than 70 minutes.
Dean said:
'It's been an honour to run with Jamie, Richard and the rest of the Alzheimer's Society running team today. It always feels fantastic to be running amongst thousands of people raising money for good causes, and for their loved ones past and present. I'm also proud to have captained a win for Yorkshire in the Great Run Battle of the Roses competition!'
This is the third consecutive year Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer Scotland have been Bupa's nominated charities. By the end of 2011, they hope to have raised £3.5million to fight dementia.
Dr Graham Stokes, Director of Dementia Care at Bupa Care Services said:
'We're very pleased to be supporting Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer Scotland for a third year. As the UK's leading provider of dementia care, we're committed to helping people with the disease to live well. We understand how important it is to work with Alzheimer's Society to support people with dementia today and find a cure for tomorrow. Signing up to support the Alzheimer's charities in a Bupa Great Run means you can get fit, help reduce your risk of dementia and raise money for a very worthwhile cause.'
