Jamie Darling and Andy Newton Lee after they have completed the Bupa Great North Run for Alzheimer's Society

BBC TV presenter Jamie Darling and actor and entrepreneur Andy Newton Lee clocked up impressive times when they lead the 3,500 strong Alzheimer’s Society running team in the Bupa Great North Run.

BBC presenter and Alzheimer's Society supporter Jamie Darling was the first male celebrity to complete the run in an impressive 01:33:08. Fitness expert Jamie, who is running all of the Bupa Great Runs for Alzheimer's Society this year said:

'It was hard work, but the cheer points really kept me going and the atmosphere has been fantastic. I know how devastating dementia is for a family and I'm very proud to be running for Alzheimer's Society.  Now I'm looking forward to the next challenge - the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run on 9 October in Sheffield.'

Actor and entrepreneur Andy Newton-Lee, who was running his fourth Bupa Great North Run and flew in especially to support Alzheimer's Society from LA for the second year in a row, crossed the line in 02:07:27.  Andy, best known for roles in Hollyoaks and Casualty, said:

'It's been fantastic to return to the UK to support Alzheimer's Society in the Bupa Great North Run. The atmosphere here in the north east is second to none and running past the Alzheimer's Society cheer points always gives me that extra boost I need to keep going. I'm really proud to be running for such a good cause - after all, there are 750,000 people living with dementia in the UK.'

This is the third consecutive year Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer Scotland have been Bupa's nominated charities. By the end of 2011, they hope to have raised £3.5million to fight dementia.

Dr Graham Stokes, Director of Dementia Care at Bupa Care Services said:

'We're very pleased to be supporting Alzheimer's Society and Alzheimer Scotland for a third year. As the UK's leading provider of dementia care, we're committed to helping people with the disease to live well. We understand how important it is to work with Alzheimer's Society to support people with dementia today and find a cure for tomorrow. Signing up to support the Alzheimer's charities in a Bupa Great Run means you can get fit, help reduce your risk of dementia and raise money for a very worthwhile cause.'
