Fringe play to raise awareness of dementia

Published 8 July 2011

A one-woman show about the effect of dementia on three generations of one family is to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.

'Last Petal Falling', which is performed by Roberta Bellekom and written with her father Antony, depicts Rose, a beloved grandmother, and her battle with Alzheimer's disease. Although Rose is fictional, the play is based on Roberta's own experiences of her widowed grandmother moving closer to the family home.

Roberta says,

'What started as little bits of forgetfulness and a curious turn of phrase, rapidly became something far more significant. Dementia is not a condition that happens to other people: it has become the very real experience of an increasing number of families and this play sets out to raise awareness of the effect of Alzheimer's, not only on the person with dementia but on their family and carers.'

The play will be performed at The Space on the Mile at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival between August 8 and 13. Previews take place on August 5 and 6. To find out more information about the play visit www.lastpetalfalling.com. To order tickets call the Box Office on 0845 508 8316.
