The most common causes of dementia are Alzheimer's disease and vascular diseases such as heart disease which lead to vascular dementia.
Dementia can also be caused or exacerbated by many other diseases including HIV / AIDS, diabetes or Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease (CJD).
Since dementia is caused by the death of nerve cells, any disease that causes damage to nerve cells in the brain could cause dementia.
