Help us change dementia care in Northern Ireland

national dementia strategyThe Northern Ireland Assembly Executive has published a regional strategy for improving dementia services in Northern Ireland.

We need to build political momentum in Northern Ireland to ensure that the commitments in this strategy on improving support and services for people with dementia and their carers are prioritised and lead to real and positive change.

Regional dementia strategy

In November 2011, the Northern Ireland Executive published its regional strategy for improving services and support for people with dementia in Northern Ireland.

The strategy focused on improving understanding and early diagnosis, on the need for support and training for staff and on supporting independence of those affected by dementia.

Alzheimer's Society has welcome the publication of this strategy, which has been long awaited following a consultation in 2010. However we are disappointed that no new money was attached for implementation of the regional strategy.

What can you do?

Email or write to your Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) highlighting the urgent need to improve services for people with dementia in Northern Ireland and for the implementation of the Dementia Strategy to be made a high priority.

How to contact your MLA

  • Find the email address of your MLA by visiting the Northern Ireland Assembly website.
  • Write to your MLA at Parliament Buildings, Belfast, BT4 3XX When writing to politicians, don't forget to include your personal experience of dementia.

Thank you for your support - every contact really does count.

Listening Well Report

Listening Well, an Alzheimer's Society report that highlights the views and opinions of people with dementia about health and social care policy informed the development of the dementia strategy.
