Working in partnership

ESRC/NIHR Themed Dementia Call

As part of the Prime Minister's challenge on dementia the ESRC and NIHR have announced a joint call inviting applications for large research projects into prevention, intervention and care. This follows a highly successful dementia themed call run by the NIHR last year. Alzheimer's Society is working alongside the ESRC and NIHR to support researchers who are developing applications for the call.

We are offering a range of support and advice services with a primary focus on Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) and dissemination plans. Alzheimer's Society supported 40 applications to the 2011 NIHR Dementia Themed Call and the quality of PPI supported by the Society was noted as a strength on applications that were funded. Alzheimer's Society support could include our Research Network of over 225 carers and people with dementia, and/or  our multi-disciplined staff teams incorporating research, new media, public policy and communications expertise.

The deadline for outline applications is the week commencing 11 September so we would welcome applications to work in partnership with researchers thinking of applying for the call. Please download our partnership invitation form and return it to research@alzheimers.org.uk.

The deadline for partnership invitation forms is Friday 24 August. We advise researchers to submit as early as possible to allow sufficient time to provide meaningful PPI in advance of the outline application stage.

Research Partnerships

Alzheimer's Society has an important additional remit to promote and endorse dementia research in the UK and elsewhere. Alzheimer's Society welcomes invitations for partnerships in which we can make a worthwhile contribution, including:

  • Involvement in research projects
  • Involvement in research oriented events
  • Programmes of evaluation
  • Public engagement with science

As a partner, Alzheimer's Society brings the expertise of our Research Network, a group of over 200 people with direct experience of dementia. Where appropriate partnerships may also draw on the resources available from the research team and / or the wider organisation.

We particularly encourage proposals that fall within the remit of our research strategy but that may not be suitable for funding through our response-mode funding programme.

To apply please download the guidance document and complete the partnership application form.

Due to the high demand for partnerships and our processing time please submit applications far in advance of any deadlines related to the project.
