Dementia 2012

Dementia 2012 conference - Monday 26 March 2012

About Dementia 2012

The Dementia conference launched the Dementia 2012 report and took place on 26 March at the Hotel Russell in central London. There were many people with dementia and carers present, as well as nearly 200 delegates from the NHS, Royal Colleges, Department of Health, local authorities and private health care providers. Ann Johnson and Norrms McNamara started the day with an honest discussion about their experiences of living with dementia with Alzheimer's Society ambassador, Angela Rippon.

The Prime Minister's challenge was launched by David Cameron at the conference. With the challenge, the Prime Minister has stated his personal commitment to improving the lives of people affected by dementia. The challenge aims to push further and faster to deliver major improvement in dementia care and research in England by 2015, to ensure people with dementia, their families and carers get the services and support they need.

Alzheimer's Society launched the Dementia Friendly Communities programme to support the changes the Society calls for in the Dementia 2012 report. Delegates to the conference came together to discuss how they would take the work forward in their own roles. Many people were inspired by the presentations from Sally Chandler from the Valuing Older People Programme in Manchester and Ian Sheriff who has worked with a team to make Plymouth a dementia friendly town.
