People with dementia and their carers can face a range of issues, and Alzheimer's Society supports campaigns to ensure they receive the best possible support and treatment.
Protecting people with dementia from financial abuse
The ways in which we can manage our money are rapidly changing, and this can pose serious challenges for people living with dementia. People with dementia and their families may need support to manage their money and stay safe from financial abuse.
Alzheimer's Society undertook the largest ever survey carried out on this subject, analysing responses from 104 carers and 47 people with dementia - as well as focus groups and interviews with professionals - to find out more about this issue. Our report Short changed: Protecting people with dementia from financial abuse highlights that an alarming number of people have been subject to financial abuse and calls for people with dementia to be better protected.
Support the Hardest Hit campaign
Disabled people, those with long-term conditions and their families risk being hit hard by cuts to the benefits and services they need to live their lives. The Hardest Hit campaign, organised jointly by the Disability Benefits Consortium (DBC) and the UK Disabled People's Council, brings together disabled people and their families, and organisations and groups who represent them, to campaign to ensure people receive a fair deal.
People with dementia often pay huge amounts for the care they need, and benefits such as Disability Living Allowance (DLA) can help support people live their lives to the full. Although Alzheimer's Society supports the development of a simpler benefits system, we must ensure people with dementia don't lose out in any changes.
Alzheimer's Society encourages people to join the Hardest Hit campaign and to ensure the voices of people with dementia are heard.
Over prescription of antipsychotics
Alzheimer's Society is concerned that antipsychotic drugs are being inappropriately over-prescribed to people with dementia. There is particular concern about their use in care homes.
Access to drugs
Alzheimer's Society has campaigned for a number of years to ensure people with Alzheimer's disease to have access to drug treatments and early diagnosis.
