Dementia training for hospital staff
People with dementia over the age of 65 currently occupy up to a quarter of hospital beds at one time. In general, patients tend to stay longer in hospital than patients without dementia. For the patient this has an impact on dementia symptoms, physical health and well-being. For the NHS there is an inevitable cost implication.
Alzheimer's Society works with both NHS Trusts and private healthcare providers to address the issues facing staff responsible for the care of people with dementia in hospitals. Our tailored training solutions equip staff with the knowledge and skills to better engage with patients with dementia, improving the experience of a stay in hospital for those living with the condition.
By creating a workforce who understand dementia and are equipped to respond appropriately to the needs of people with dementia in their care, you will help support patients living with dementia to leave hospital earlier. We have developed a range of training solutions suitable for hospital staff at all levels.
Our one day awareness workshop is designed for all staff who come into contact with patients with dementia, including healthcare assistants, porters, housekeepers and receptionists.
For qualified staff, practice development leads, nursing staff and allied professionals we offer a more comprehensive programme delivered over two workshop days, with project work and a follow up presentation session. This programme asks participants to identify an area of improvement within their own work setting, challenging them to implement a change and report back to the group after a 12 week study period.
