Getting support

Under the NHS and Community Care Act 1990, a local authority social services department has a duty to assess people who may be in need of services. If this community care assessment concludes that there is a need for certain services, these must then be provided. Such services may include aids and adaptations, meals on wheels, home care, sitting and respite schemes, day care and residential and nursing home care.

The NHS can be a major source of help for people with dementia and their carers, providing services ranging from chiropody and dentistry to physiotherapy and continence advice.

There are also a number of voluntary organisations that may be able to provide you with information, advice and practical help.
