Alzheimer's Society

Memory Walk

Saturday 22 September 2007

To mark World Alzheimer’s day the Newcastle branch of the Alzheimer’s Society will be holding a Memory Walk along Newcastle’s famous and historic Quayside on Saturday 22 September at 1pm. This is a fundraising and awareness raising event so we need your support.

This is your chance to walk in memory of - or in support of - a loved one, whether it's a relative or friend. As well as celebrating your memories of them, it's also a great way to raise money to help local people affected by dementia, their carers and families.

You can walk as an individual or as part of a group with family or friends. We start our walk from the Newcastle side of the Millennium Bridge and continue along the Quayside, passing some of the many bridges spanning the River Tyne to the Business Park in Elswick and returning back to the Millennium Bridge.

The walk is just over 2 miles and can take up to 1 hour to complete (including two stops for refreshments) – it is not obligatory to complete the full distance!

People get ready to take part in Memory Walk
The walk is suitable for buggies, wheelchairs and dogs! There is good car parking facilities on the Quayside, near the Law Courts and the surrounding area. QuayLink bus services run every ten minutes from the Haymarket to the Quayside.

All registered walkers will receive a certificate upon completion of the walk. So come along and support us and let’s make this a great day out. To receive your registration and sponsorship forms please call us on 0191 236 2006 or email: Alznewcastle@aol.com

Quote I’ve just been diagnosed with dementia. I’m not too sure what the future holds for me but I know the Alzheimer’s Society are there to help and support me. I’m really glad I did the Memory Walk to help the local branch with its work and to raise awareness about this illness.

Thank you to our team of runners who took part in the Great North Run 2006.

Starting in Newcastle and finishing near the beach at South Shields, the Great North Run is the world's largest half marathon.

Alzheimer's Society Great North Runners
The Newcastle Branch is looking for keen runners to take part in the Great North Run 2007. Dementia affects over 3000 people in Newcastle alone. The money you raise will help to continue and develop our services for local people with dementia, their carers and families

There are two ways to join our team. You can either:

  • Apply for your own place or

  • Apply for one of the Society’s guaranteed places

How do I secure my own place?

In order to secure your own place you need to complete a Great North Run application in January.

Check out the Great Run website for further information: www.greatrun.org

What is a guaranteed place?

These are places that the Branch has purchased. The Branch has a limited number of these guaranteed places. For these we ask participants to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship.

Please contact us as soon as possible to reserve your place. Call 0191 236 2006 or email Alznewcastle@aol.com

All runners for the branch will receive a free T-shirt (please state size), sponsorship forms and an information pack. We'll even give you a mention in our newsletter!
