Pals

The main aim of this scheme is to enable people of all ages who are still physically fit (but who experience some degree of mental disability due to dementia) to continue to enjoy leisure activities with the support of a care worker/Pal.

Alzheimer's Forum

The Pals are employed to accompany a person with dementia to their chosen leisure pursuit e.g. walks, swimming, football match, shopping trip, keep fit, bingo, theatre, cinema.

About Us

Alzheimer's Society is a membership organisation, which works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Many of our 25,000 members have personal experience of dementia, as carers, health professionals or people with dementia themselves, and their experiences help to inform our work.

This could be seen as an alternative to Day Care - especially for younger people with dementia or for those in the early stages of the illness.  If a carer prefers to be included in the outings but needs the support of a Pal to be able to enjoy joint activities, this would be equally appropriate.

This scheme can also assist people with dementia who live alone, who remain physically active, to continue a social activity with the help of a Pal.  One of the key features of this scheme is flexibility.

Pals Costs

Expenses incurred during an outing by the client and the Pal should be met by the client (mileage is charged at 40p per mile).  Travel expenses in getting to and from the client's home is £4.00 per visit.  However this expenditure can be waived in certain circumstances.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The client will have been diagnosed as having dementia.

  • Be mentally and physically fit enough to benefit from their chosen activity with the support of a Pals carer.  This is to be assessed by the Branch Manager using a Risk Assessment format.

  • Persons with dementia who live alone are eligible.

  • The client should live within the Greater Peterborough Area.
