Carer support services

Alzheimer's Society

We provide information, advice and support to people who are, or have been, involved in caring for someone with dementia.  We offer one to one emotional support over the phone, at your home, at our branch office or at an alternative place of your choice.

One to one support

Our aim is to empower carers to make their own decisions about their lives and the lives of those they care for. We work with carers to identify possible options open to them on a variety of dementia related issues.

We are frequently asked about coping strategies for dealing with some aspects of behaviour the person who is being cared for. Here, we draw on advice produced by the society nationally, as well as sharing the experience and tips passed on to us by other carers who have faced similar issues.  The branch has a long established care service and staff experienced in caring for people with dementia means we have valuable resources to call on.

Carer support groups

The branch currently runs five monthly support groups offering carers the opportunity to meet other carers, to share experiences, learn more about caring and perhaps make new friends.  It is hoped that by sharing these experiences, about what they have found both helpful and unhelpful in their caring role, that they will inform and empower each other through the process of caring.

The Early Intervention group aims to assist carers of people who are in the very early stages of dementia.  This group meets on the 4th Thursday of each month, from 2pm - 4pm at the Carers Centre, 6 Saville Place, Newcastle.

The Caring Friends group is for carers who are caring for someone aged over 65 years.  This group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, from 6pm - 8pm at the Tomlinson Teaching Centre, Newcastle General Hospital.

The Younger Persons group is for carers who are caring for someone aged under 65 years.  This group meets on the 1st Thursday of each month, from 6pm - 8pm at the Tomlinson Teaching Centre, Newcastle General Hospital.

The Time Out 1 group is a social group for former carers.  This group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, from 2pm - 4pm at the Carers Centre, 6 Saville Place, Newcastle.

The Time Out 2 group is a group for carers whose relative is in long term care.  This group meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month, from 11am - 1pm at the Carers Centre, 6 Saville Place, Newcastle.

Befriending service

Befrienders are trained volunteers who offer a supportive friendship to carers on a regular basis. Volunteers usually visit for 1 ½ - 2 hours per week. Offering carers the opportunity to talk about their caring role, giving encouragement, spending social time outside of the home i.e. meeting up for coffee, or talking about everyday issues unconnected to dementia if that is what is preferred.  The volunteer performs the role of a friend where, perhaps because of their caring role, the carer has become isolated from their previous friends.

What do carers say about befriending volunteers:

Quote I don't know what I would have done without her. She's been an absolute brick.

What do carers say about support groups:

Quote I can go into a meeting feeling fed up and wondering whether I can cope.  I come out feeling a lot brighter and knowing I can cope.
