Carers' Support Worker

Bromley Branch has a part-time carers' support worker, Geraldine Turner, who is assisted by a small group of volunteers.

The carers' support worker:

  • Is normally the first point of contact for all enquiries and responds to requests for information and home visits.

  • Provides individual comfort and guidance to carers; and empowers carers to obtain the benefits to which they are entitled by directing them to the appropriate services - both statutory and voluntary.

  • Promotes links and works with community psychiatric nurses, social workers and other professionals; and agencies providing services to people with dementia and their carers.

  • Is involved with the running of carers' support groups, and information and training workshops.

  • Enhances awareness of the Alzheimer's Society and its services to residents of the London Borough of Bromley.

Individual office appointments and/or home visits can be arranged by the carers' support worker on request.

Carers' Support Group - a series of informal information and support sessions for carers of local people with dementia

Are you caring for someone who is confused and forgetful?

Do you sometimes feel isolated and burdened by your caring responsibilities?

Would you like to meet with other carers and professionals working in the field of dementia for information sharing, advice and support?

Our carers support group offers a chance to unwind, exchange ideas, gather information from professional speakers and join in some social events.

The group meetings will be held in the Bethany room at St Luke's Church, Bromley Common on the last Wednesday of each month.

The meetings last from 10.00 to 12.00 noon with tea/coffee served before the talk starts at 10.30.

Self-help Support Groups

There are two groups for female carers meeting on the 2nd and 3rd Wednesday of each month. These groups are attended by either Geraldine Turner or Jo George.

There are also 2 men’s self help support groups. The first meets on the second Monday each month and is attended by Geraldine Turner.

The second meets on the third Monday of the month and is run by a volunteer who is himself a carer.

All groups meet in Bromley and run from 1 –3 pm . Please call Geraldine for details on 020 8249 1494.

If a daytime group is not convenient, and there is sufficient demand, then it may be possible to organise a mixed evening support group. Please call Geraldine to register your interest on 020 8249 1494.

Toilets for Disabled People

Special keys are available which can unlock toilets for people with disabilities (the large toilets with the wheelchair symbol displayed). They are called RADAR keys and will open any toilet for the disabled in the country. These are unisex which is especially useful if the person you care for needs help to use the toilet.

The keys cost £3.50 and Geraldine Turner has a stock at White Gables. She has also obtained a list of all the public toilets in Bromley and this is available on request.

Carers' Cards.

These cards can be carried by the carer in case of an unfortunate event such as the carer becoming unwell or involved in an accident whilst out. The card shows the name and address of the person being cared for and appropriate steps can be taken to safeguard their welfare in the carers absence.

Holidays for people who have Alzheimer's, or other forms of dementia, and their carers.

Holidays can be arranged with Vitalise (formerly the Winged Fellowship Trust).  Some weeks may be subsidised by the Alzheimer's Society's national office.

Further details are available from Geraldine Turner.
