News

New Minibus

We are pleased to have taken delivery of our new minibus which has replaced one of our existing ones.  It was paid for by donations to the Mayor of Bromley's 'Charity of the Year' appeal when our Branch President, Carole Hubbard, was Mayor.

Support Manager

We welcome Tracey Errington who has joined us as our new support manager.

Tracey says "This is an exciting and challenging position for me.  I am really looking forward to supporting and promoting the Society and the excellent services that it has to offer in the Bromley area."

Volunteer Coordinator

Miriam Flood has joined us as a volunteer to coordinate our willing band of volunteers.  This is an important venture and we welcome Miriam and look forward to working with and supporting her in this role.

Branch Manager

We welcome our new branch manager Peter Todd.  Peter brings with him over 30 years experience in financial services, management and business development.  Prior to joining the Alzheimer's Society Peter spent the last three years working in a care home that specialised in dementia support.

Peter says “This is an exciting role for me and I am delighted to be part of an experienced team that has been supporting the people of Bromley for nearly 30 years. I am keen to extend the local services offered by the Society and I am pleased to have a pro-active committee of volunteers”.

28th Annual Meeting of the Alzheimer's Society, Bromley Branch

Held on Wednesday 17 September 2008 at Community House, South Street, Bromley BR1 1RH

The Branch Development Committee chairman Ken Addis presented the branch annual report and finance report, which were well received.  In  his annual report he gave a potted history of his involvement with the branch and highlighted some of the achievements and activities which had taken place during the year.  Further details from this report may be seen by clicking here.

Area Manager Ian Howarth spoke about the current changes and future plans for the Society, including the much awaited National Dementia Strategy which is due to be published this autumn. Both Ken and Ian emphasised the need to make good use of the branch funds to further extend the services we provide.

Suzanne Doyle was elected as Honorary Treasurer, and Peter Murphy and Ken Short were both elected to the Branch Development Committee. We would like to thank Suzanne, Peter and Ken for standing and we very much look forward to working with them.

Our guest speaker this year was Rebecca Jarvis from the London Borough of Bromley / Bromley Primary Care Trust who gave us a fascinating insight into the ways in which the provision of social care in Bromley is being transformed to meet the ever-evolving needs of the local community.

Newsletter

We now have a new style Bromley branch newsletter which has been redesigned to incorporate the Society’s revised branding and colour scheme. We hope that the recipients enjoy reading it and find it both entertaining and enlightening.

Ken Short, a new member of the Branch Development Committee, has kindly volunteered to take on the role of editor.  Looking forward, we plan to issue the branch newsletter twice a year – in the spring and in the autumn.

The newsletter will be supplemented by a new monthly ‘Carers News’, also produced in the Society’s new styling.  The team have been beavering away on this and hopefully carers will already have received their copy of the September edition.

Training for Carers

We recently held a very successful training day for carers of people with dementia covering ‘Understanding Dementia’ and ‘Coping with Unusual/Challenging Behaviour’. The workshop, run by an accredited trainer, was held at White Gables and lasted from 10.30am – 3.00pm . A light lunch was served midway. These events are free to carers and further training will be arranged so please contact the Carers Support Service to register your interest.

Saturday Cafes at White Gables

We hold occasional coffee mornings/afternoon teas for those people with dementia on our day centre waiting list and their carers and families.  It is an opportunity to meet with the committee, volunteers and staff of the Bromley Branch of the Alzheimer’s Society, meet those in a similar situation and gain information and advice on services available.

Please call for details of our next event.

Ombudsman's Review into NHS Funding for Long Term Care of Older and Disabled People

Were you or someone close to you refused full NHS funding for long term health care between April 1996 and April 2003?  If so, you may be entitled to have your case reviewed and possibly repayment made to you for the cost of your care at that time.
