Support for carers

We provide free and confidential information, advice and support services to people who are, or have been, involved in caring for someone with dementia.

If you would like to talk to someone who understands your feelings about being a carer and has knowledge about dementia, our carer support workers can arrange to visit you in your own home or at a place of your choice.

One to one support

We have experience in dealing with a wide range of issues and offer one to one support, regular telephone contact if required and home visits. We have a comprehensive range of factsheets and other reading materials which we can provide to you free of charge.

Support groups for carers

We also offer opportunities for carers to meet together on a regular basis in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. Support groups offer carers the chance to share experiences, learn more about caring and perhaps make some new friends. We currently provide five groups and we are always willing to discuss with you the most appropriate group for you to join.

  • The Early Intervention group aims to assist carers of people who are in the very early stages of dementia. This group meets on the 4th Thursday of each month.

  • The Caring Friends group is for carers who are caring for someone aged over 65 years. This group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

  • The Younger Persons group is for carers who are caring for someone aged under 65 years. This group meets on the 1st Thursday of each month.

  • The Time Out 2 group is a group for carers whose relative is in long term care. This group meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month.

Drop-in club for people with dementia and their carer

The Drop-in club provides an informal and supportive environment for people with dementia and their carers. The group meets every six weeks at Brunswick Methodist Church, Newcastle city centre. Some of the benefits to the person with dementia attending the group include: having a break from being cared for and from the home environment; being able to develop self-esteem through contributing and participating with other people. Some of the benefits to carers attending the group include: having a break from the caring role; having an opportunity to develop informal supportive networks with other carers.

If you would like to attend any of the above groups or would like further information, please contact Gill or Jan.
